What I Learned During My First Week In College

Like all the past and current college freshmen have learned, the first week in college can be pretty overwhelming. I’m only on the second day of my first week and I have already made stupid, stupid mistakes. I have forgotten my room key while taking out the trash and have done the wrong problems for math homework.

Needless to say, these mistakes of mine helped me develop insight on what things I should and should not do in the upcoming years. What I learned during my first week in college is probably what I will remember the most of if one ever asks of my “college experience.”

1. Get to lecture early.

Despite arriving to my lecture 15 minutes early, I ended up sitting in the last row, front and center. (I wanted to avoid excusing myself over and over again.) What I didn’t realize was that my seemingly smart plan to arrive a quarter of an hour early turned out to be the plans of 300 people as well. All I can say now is that I hope to see the professor clearly next time.

2. Buy what is necessary.

I had decided to rent my math textbook. However, the price of renting was only a couple dollars less than buying it. In addition, there was also a free PDF of the textbook online, which I had already known about. After seeing the receipt, I then decided to return my textbook and its binder an hour later. Not to mention that I also returned the notebook I bought the same day a couple of days later.

3. SLEEP EARLIER.

Shout out to those of you who have an 8 a.m. class because I have to wake up at that time … every day. Having experienced a lack of sleep on the first day of class, I nearly fell asleep in two of my lectures. This is not surprising and uncommon at all, but to those who want to pay attention during classes … sleep earlier.

4. Get to know more people.

I initially thought that I would have been trapped in my dorm, watching Youtube videos and eating in my dorm. However, I can actually say that I’ve gotten to know more people in my hall than I thought I would and meeting them has made my freshman year better. So I encourage all freshmen college students to avoid staying in your dorms and venture out into your hall. They’re all in the same boat as you, so don’t be intimidated.

As I have passed my knowledge through this article to those in this online community, my only wish is for all to be able to enjoy their freshman year in college. After all, it’s the place where you will last be a freshman.
